Both Chris Pugliese and Van Arno juxtapose the conventional with the unconventional in their paintings, exploring cultural constructions of the expected.  Chris Pugliese's Renaissance style portrait paintings of alternative subjects and Van Arno's depiction of classical women of literature in atypical situations, expand upon such notions of the familiar.  In using different classical methods, Chris Pugliese and Van Arno challenge the viewer to take something deeper away from the aesthetic beauty of their images.
